Day 872: Palmerston North – Taihape

Posted by Thomas Andersen Posted on Apr - 20 - 2013

Distance: 106.57 km
Ride time: 4:52:45
Average: 21.74 km/h
Total: 20011 km

When I visited Tony in Wellington I didn’t just get given a mountain of food to put in my bags, but also the book “Mood of Future Joys” by Alastair Humphreys – a mesmerizing book about a round the worldcycling trip that I’m now reading during my breaks – which again means that my breaks seem to be twice as long as they normally are.

In terms of natural beauty I didn’t expect too much for this part of New Zealand – yet, this country continues to surprise even when you don’t expect it. I had a blast cycling through rolling hills and natural gorges that reminded me of Lord of the Rings.

Further up the road I reached the 20.000 km point! An emotional moment as I’m now half way around the world on this trip that I imagine will be around 40.000 km in total. I had a short break at the side of the road to reflect as I was thinking about the day I left Copenhagen at kilometer 0 as well as the 10.000 km point which I reached as I was cycling into Kuala Lumpur.

To conclude the celebrations I bought a cold coke in the next town I cycled through. It doesn’t take much.

  1. I’ll have to pick up a copy of the book. My reading list is getting longer and longer!

Btw, you don’t post your Garmin GPS results, any longer, I’ve noticed.

  2. It’s a great book, recomended!! I stopped using the GPS somewhere in Australia because it was always running out of battery… later I lost it (must have forgot it somewhere in the grass when I packed down the tent). I don’t miss it too apart from being able to post my track here on the blog after the stage.
