As Michael was searching for a bike mechanic in Temuco, I had a chance to walk around enjoying the morning atmosphere in el centro. I was really excited to see the first traces of Spanish colonial architecture – reminding me of my visit to Mexico some years ago.
My Lonely Planet guidebook says that Temuco has “nothing interesting” to offer. This was probably why I liked it!
At 3 pm we were back on the Panamericana. The tail wind was strong so even with the late start we were able to clock 100 km. During the day I also passed the 24000 km mark – time for the usual photo.
Michael was telling me how he had been camping on gas stations when he was cycling on the east coast of Argentina. I liked the idea of a free place to put the tents, but once the sun was setting there were no gas stations in sight. Instead we went into a local restaurant, and even before we had the chance to say anything, the host asked if we wanted to put up our tents for the night. Problem solved!
Over dinner we were talking about our plans for the coming days. I wanted to cycle fast towards Santiago on the Panamerican Highway while Michael was considering going on smaller roads towards the coast. Hence it looked like our cycling days together would be coming to an end – at least for a while. Thanks for the great cycling company Michael! I hope to see you for a glass of red wine and a good steak in Mendoza 🙂
