Day 1434, Puno – Santa Lucia: Thunder and Lightning

Posted by Thomas Andersen Posted on Aug - 25 - 2014

Altitude: 3982 m
Total: 28659 km

Rest days in Cuzco and visiting Machu Picchu – there haven’t been much cycling lately. I enjoyed the feeling of being back on the bike as I climbed my way out of Puno, heading for the pampa.

The weather was great as I enjoyed my last views over Lake Titicaca before making a left turn for the mountains. It was even so warm that I could cycle without my jacket – that seems to be a very long time since that happened last time.

I had looked at my map and thought I had found a shortcut. The road I had found turned out to be a dirt road twisting it’s way through small villages. It was good enough cycling, but it would probably had been faster to stay on the main road from the beginning.

Then thunderclouds started to appear over the mountains I was heading into, and soon I was surrounded by lightning and thunder. Luckily managed to miss the biggest rain showers. A bit of excitement to spice up the day!

The temperature had now dropped, and I was once again cycling with hat, gloves and all my clothes – just as I have been doing every day for the last two months. The road was climbing and the landscape got more barren. As usual it was not difficult to find a camp site. Setting up the tent it was quickly getting cold. I was expecting another night with frozen water bottles in my tent.

    Hi Thomas,

Now that I’m bed ridden for the next few months I’ll be looking forward to staying on top of your journal, it’s great stuff.

  2. Hey Fred! My very best wishes for a speedy recovery. Hope you will be back on the road soon, so you can make it into the blog for the 4th time! Peru is great, but more climbing than cycling lately (just made it to 6000 m!). Best regards from Arequipa! Thomas
