Day 1523, Morrope – Piura: Police Escort

Posted by Thomas Andersen Posted on Dec - 06 - 2014

Distance: 186.14 km
Ride time: 8.10.02
Average: 22.79 km/h
Max speed: 37.64 km/h
Total: 31168 km

Up by 6 and on the bike by 7 – today I would try to make it the 180 km from Morrope to Piaru in one go. Yesterday I had been doing some shopping as I didn’t expect to find any restaurants or shops on the way. I might have over-done the shopping a bit somce I had almost as much food on the bike as when we went into the small dirt in the Andes Mountains with no villages for weeks.

The road was flat and progress steady as I quickly made the first 50 km before the first break. I then discovered that there was indeed a few restaurants on the road out here in Sechura Desert. That was on top of all the food I had already bough. I was not hungry today!

I thought the most dangerous road I would pass in Peru was in Paijan a few days ago. When I stopped for a 2nd lunch in one of the small restaurants the lady told me to be very careful as I cyclist had been robbed on this road a few weeks ago.

When I started to cycle again I was often looking back over my shoulder just as I had been doing the other day. At one point I did see a car driving slowly up behind me but it turned out to be the police. They told me it was better if the followed me through the next villages, and so I was cycling the next hour with police escort. I was happy the police guys were there as the villages we passed did indeed seem dodgy.

As we got closer to Piura the road got busier and the police told me that from here on it would be safe. I made it into town an hour before darkness, happy to have crossed the desert in one day. I wouldn’t have liked to camp out there.
