Day 1791, Lubec: The Easternmost Corner

I’m in the extreme northeastern corner of the US – but being treated with extreme Southern hospitality by the wonderful Sonnier family originally from Louisiana… what a great place to stop for a day to reflect over the ride up the US east coast.

Pat’s and Alice’s summer house is located right next to the Quoddy Narrows, and looking out the window you can easily see Canada – a reminder of things to come. For today, however, I was just enjoying my last day in the US with a smile on my face. After a big breakfast I took the bike and cycled the few kilometres to the lighthouse at Qouddy Head – the easternmost point in the US.

Eric WW1ME who I had stayed with the other night showed up as well, and so did Scott K0DQ. As we took the customary photos in front of the light house I thought about the day I left from Key West in Florida. Key West is the southernmost point in the US (only 90 miles from Cuba). Now I had made it to eastern corner. I’m wondering if I will someday stand at the northern and western corners as well – only the future will tell.

After the photos we all went back to Pat’s and Alice’s home for a big Southern dinner! I have said it before, but the hospitality has been truly amazing all the way through the US, and today we were finishing in style. Hereby a big collective thank you to everyone who helped making it possible – what a ride!

Tomorrow I will cross the short bridge over the Quoddy Narrows. Canada, country number 38, is next!
