Day 2027, Nyakanazi – Nyakasanza: Travelling Slowly

Posted by Thomas Andersen Posted on Jun - 01 - 2016

Distance: 88.2 km
Ride time: 6:04:53
Average: 14.5 km/h
Max speed: 55.8 km/h
Total: 49813 km

It had been an incredible 700 km dirt ride over the last two weeks through a very remote corner of Tanzania. After having breakfast in Nyakanazi I was on my way to Nyakasanza (cool names around here) on tarmac again.

Back on tarmac the progress was getting somewhat smoother though not exactly a walk in the park. It was up and down all day, and I’m not even in Rwanda yet.

It’s moments like these that I like so much about bicycle touring; the fact that you travel slow enough to see life unfolding in the small villages you pass by.

In Nyakasanza I checked into my final 6$ guesthouse in Tanzania. Together with Malawi I’m pretty sure Tanzania is one of the cheapest countries I have visited – and not only that – one of the most interesting as well! When I cross into Rwanda tomorrow I’m expecting the prices to rise but the adventure to continue.

Interesting to see that there are so many people walking along the roads in your pictures. I am sure that is the primary mode of transportation, but I wonder how far they walk and if it is to work or to shop?

If I could turn back time..

Hey Thomas, It’s day 2027 not 2017 I think. Oops!

Did you ever stop to chat with villagers there? I saw in a post further back you didn’t do that because no one knew English.

Hi there! Thank you for this well informed pages! We are trying to get from Kigoma to Kigali and tomorrow we are taking a bus to Nyakanazi. I have heard of people doing the same road and they all seem to pass by Nyakanazi. Where did you sleep over there? I keep hearing about the sayari motel but all from a few years back, impossible to find any active contact and no one can help me find info. As I’ll get just at night fall in Nyakanazi I’d like to avoid being out after dark if possible.
    Thanks in advance

  4. Hi Antoine. Hope you are having a great time in Kigoma and enjoy the lake. It’s a beautiful spot. I seem to remember there was something like 5 to 7 guesthouses in Nyakanazi but I don’t remember the name of the one I stayed in. I think you will be able to find a bed there without any problems. The place is very small so even if you arrive after dark you won’t have to walk far.

    Best wishes
