Day 2032, Katuna – Ntungamo: Back in Africa…

Max speed: 52.6 km/h
Total: 50177 km

It had been quite a change to arrive in Rwanda and experience such a well-organized country in the middle of Africa. Now the change was equally big as entered Uganda and was getting ready to cycle the first kilometers in this country. Back to the chaos, back to Africa!

The view from my room a cloudy morning at 1800 meters above sea level. Things would clear up as soon as the sun was turned on. After all I’m only a couple of degrees south of the equator now; the sun is strong here.

Even though I had left the thousand green hills of Rwanda, the climbing certainly continued today. All the way up to a beautiful pass at 2000 m and then down again. I very much like this kind of climbing as the climate is perfect, and the downhills on the other side of the passes are fast and fun.

My first impressions of Uganda is a country with super friendly people and a lot of contrasts. I had been staying in a very simple guest house for the night, and the villages are certainly poor, but in the middle of the day I started noticing restaurants that were in fact much fancier than anything I have seen for a long time. I guess a reason could be the high number of NGO’s and associated foreigners in the country…

I visited one of the modern restaurants and had a cup of good coffee and a sandwich. Surprised that I was able to find this kind of international food in the middle of nowhere in Uganda, I continued cycling through the mountains with a full stomach.

Finding another cheap guesthouse for the night was easy. Cycling in Uganda seems very straight forward. Now I’m looking forward to cross the equator in two days!
