Day 2059 – 2069: Locked Up in Nairobi

Posted by Thomas Andersen Posted on Oct - 18 - 2016

Normally while riding my bike I feel pretty integrated in the culture I’m cycling through. In Africa I might not exactly look very local with my blue eyes in (half) fancy bike, but the thing is that I feel pretty local because I’m eating at the same restaurants and sleeping at the same cheap guest houses as the locals do.

Now, this feeling of being “a local” in Africa disappeared when I called my insurance company yesterday. “We need to get you to Nairobi on a plane and have your tests done in a hospital with a certain standard” was the Danish doctor’s ruling, and so it was…

A few hours later I was waiting for a small airplane to take me back to a fancy hotel in Nairobi – and just like that I felt I was apart of this expat bobble instead of being a local on a bike…

The next ten days I spent going in and out of hospitals and eating fancy breakfast buffets with business travellers at my hotel – all while I would much rather be cycling and camping in my tent in the middle of nowhere.

Finally, the last test showed ‘all clear’, and I could leave the fresh mountain air of Nairobi behind and return to the hot and dry Turkana desert country up north. Oh well, better safe than sorry when it comes to your health.

This time I hope it was a real goodbye to Nairobi and it will be more than a few days before I will be back.

What did the problem turn out to be?

  3. Hi Scott! In fact the doctors never found anything wrong… I got a dosis of antibiotics and everything returned to normal 🙂

  4. It will be more than a few days since last time.. but you will be back in Nairobi again 🙂

  5. Oh yes Smukke… One year later, and how life has changed into something we were only starting to imagine last time I was in Nairobi 🙂
