Day 2097: Dejen – Debre Markos, Ethiopia

Posted by Thomas Andersen Posted on Nov - 23 - 2016

Distance: 70.2 km
Ride time: 4:31:22
Average: 15.5 km/h
Max speed: 48.2 km/h
Total: 52456 km

After yesterday’s marathon climb, today’s ride was more of a manageable kind; 70 km along the rolling hills of central Ethiopia. I had loaded another 5 hours of podcasts onto my phone, and with those playing in my ears I started cycling towards Debre Markos.

My mood was good – which is in a very direction relation to how many kids throw stones at me – today only a single one!

When you look over the Ethiopian landscape of fields in this part of the country, it’s quite amazing to think that all the work is done manually. No machines around…

I already arrived at 2 pm at my destination for the day. Quite lucky since that was exactly when today’s downpour began. It seems like I will need to start early the next mornings in order to get somewhere before the crazy rain comes.

I feel like I have been in the rainy season in Africa for a long time. Usually those seasons only lasts a couple of months, but since I have been moving 5000 km north the seasons have moved along with me. Normally a bit of rain is only refreshing, but up here at above 2000 m I prefer it dry.

In Debre Markos I found my usual cheap 10$ room and watched the rain come down out the window as I fell asleep.

Hey Thomas! I’ve been wondering, what kinds of podcasts did you listen to during your trip? Thanks for continuing to update the blog.

  2. Not a bad room for $10!

  3. Thanks Tyler… glad to know you enjoy the updates! I’m listening to a number of Danish comedy and documentary podcasts as well as Jason Calacanis’ startup show. Hmm, a just checking the list now – most of them are in Danish actually. Nice way to remember your language 🙂
