Day 19: Presov – Uzhorod (Ukraine!)

Posted by Thomas Andersen Posted on Oct - 25 - 2010

Distance: 113.9 km
Ridetime: 5:43:28
Average: 19.7 km/h
Total distance: 1476 km

I woke up at 8:30 feeling surprisingly good after the Bošáckas yesterday. Also the rain had stopped so I decided to head for Ukraine.

After a great breakfast consisting of fried vegetables and eggs by super chef Dano I was soon back on the bike.

Getting closer to the border with Ukraine I started to feel excited. Dano had explained that the crossing might course a few problems. After passing the several km long queue of trucks, the first problem soon emerged: No walking or bicycling across the border was the clear message from the border guards. I had already started to look at the map for the next border crossing as I got the idea to ask some of the cars in the quie for lift across the border. The first few drivers where clearly not interested but then I guy in a old car offered the ride for 10€ which I was only happy to pay.

My new Ukrainian friend seemed to have been on a business trip to Slovakia and had a lot of documents that needed attention. It all took a few hours but eventually we made it across the border and I was riding into Uzhorod.

In a suburb area I met Ana and her family consisting of her 6 year old sister Ksenia and their parents who had generously offered a place to stay. And what a nice family I was adopted into. There seems to be a direct relation to how difficult it is to get into a country and how nice the people are.
