Day 37: Ruse – Varna

Posted by Thomas Andersen Posted on Nov - 10 - 2010

Distance: 168.33 km (record!)
Ridetime: 8:56:51
Average: 19.6 km/h
Total distance: 2633 km

Looking at the map yesterday evening I decided Varna would be the goal for today’s ride. Knowing the distance I was up at 6:30, ready for an early start.

What I didn’t really expect was the route to be quite hilly. The climbs were not steep or long, but it seemed to be either uphill or downhill all day. The Garmin states an elevation gain of 1516 m and 4746 calories burned throughout the day. A very hard ride indeed!

Today’s firsts:

  • First minaret spotted. Many more will follow shortly as I head into Turkey.
  • First time riding in shorts and T-shirt! I didn’t expect this to happen before Egypt.
  • First time seeing some real water (the Black Sea) since leaving Denmark

I managed to make it to Varna just before darkness and in time for my appointment with radio friend Cristo at 6 pm. Talk about a full day!

I’m lucky ! Because through your pictures I will see Bulgaria too ( shame on me, because it’s one of our country’s neighbours), but personally I only passed through Bulgaria in my way to Greece, this year and the last year. Never stopped to see Sofia or Varna but thank’s God for your posts. Take care and enjoy !

Udholdenhed, vedholdenhed og en væren i nuet. Det kendetegner dig og din tur. Viise ord, det med at mennesker kan kommunikere uden ord. Fortsat god rejse

  7. Great journey! I’ll follow it with interest,

Gonna pinch your GPS track. Nutter though given the look of it on google terrain, I was looking at doing it over 2 days and stopping in Shumen. Will see if I have the legs for it!
