Day 200: Jitra – Georgetown

Posted by Thomas Andersen Posted on May - 01 - 2011

Distance: 111.54 km
Ridetime: 05:01:28
Average: 22.2 km/h
Total distance: 9501 km

Several cyclists and other travellers I had met in Thailand had all recommended a visit to Georgetown on Palau Pinang. As I was in need of a few rest days it sounded like the perfect place to stop.

There is a bridge to Pinang Island, but as expected it was not allowed to cycle on it. As I was looking for a ferry a friendly local cyclist came over to say hello. Za’im soon showed me the ferry and even decided to join me for the short trip over to Pinang.

As soon as we got off the ferry another touring cyclist approached us. It was Marius from Holland who had been cycling down from Bangkok as well. We all went for drink at at a harbour front café.

While Za’im was catching the ferry back to the mainland, Marius showed me the way to “Love Lane”, the street where all the cheap backpacker hostels are located.

As if meeting two cyclists within an hour was not enough, as soon as I had checked into my hostel I met Laura from the UK – another solo cyclist on a 6 month ride around SE Asia.

The scene has been set for some very nice days in Georgetown.
