Day 243: Bogor – Bandung

Posted by Thomas Andersen Posted on Jun - 24 - 2011

Distance: 118.83 km
Ridetime: 05:53:43
Average: 20.2 km/h
Total distance: 11672 km

Today I was going to hit the first mountains on Java, and I was looking forward to it. Once out of Bogor and into the mountains I was hoping for almost empty roads like on Sumatra. That was not to be. It turned out that Thursday and Friday were public holidays, so what seemed like half of Jakarta was heading for a long weekend in the mountains.

The traffic was at Indian levels. I even saw a TV station making a report of the crazy traffic on the tiny roads. On the bright sight I was climbing faster than the cars who almost stood still, but with all the pollution it was not enjoyable cycling.

The first 32 km were all uphill – a hard way to start the day. At the top of the climb at 1500 m a guy was selling gloves and hats. After 6 months in tropical heat I was also feeling cold, but I don’t think the temperature was below 20 degrees. The next 30 km were downhill – great fun had it not been for all the traffic.

In Bandung I found a cheap hotel and quickly fell asleep. It had been a hard day.
