Cycling Around the World Day 861: Rapahoe – Westport

Posted by Thomas Andersen Posted on Feb - 17 - 2013

Distance: 65.57 km
Ride time: 3:35:24
Average: 20.5 km/h
Total: 19225 km

When I’m wild camping I wake up with the sun – sunrise is at 6:30 these days. I then pack my tent and bags rather fast and is back on the road within half an hour. Then I look for a place to have breakfast. Today I passed the so-called pancake rocks at Punakaiki just at that time. Breakfast with a view, not bad.

My goal today was to reach Westport and go to the library to finish the programming tasks I had been working on the lasts days. I love the libraries in New Zealand. Free wifi, laptop working positions with power plug, and friendly staff.

For the night I decided to splash out the 17$ it did cost to put up my tent in the garden of the local YHA hostel. The hostel was located in a 100 year old house and had real character. In the big living room with deep sofas and a fire place I could hear Danish and Swedish being spoken. I’m surprised about the number of Scandinavians I meet here. Obviously a popular destination even though it is very far away from home.
