Day 1213: Into El Chaltén

Posted by Thomas Andersen Posted on Jan - 20 - 2014

Distance: 13.95 km
Ride time: 1:14:27
Average: 11.31 km/h
Total: 22007 km

After the very long day yesterday I enjoyed an extra hour of sleep in the morning. I love waking up to a view like this!

On the short ride into El Chalten I passed 22000 km in a beautiful mountain setting, right at the foot of the snowcapped Andes mountains. I’m now leaving the flat pampa behind and will continue into the mountains. I’m very excited about this!

In El Chalten I went to a bakery to buy some bread and check my email. I could read that Michael, the Danish cyclist, was still in town. At his camp site I managed to meet him just as he was about to leave. It was great to catch up exchanging stories about the crazy wind adventures. Michael had been stuck in El Chalten with rain for some days and was eager to get going. I would be hanging around for a few days hoping to do some hiking if the weather would cooperate. We planned to meet in Chile later in the week to do some cycling together.

At the camp site I soon met more familiar faces. It turned out that a number of backpackers I had met three weeks ago in Punta Arenas had now made it to El Chaltén. I thought I would be a lot slower on bicycle compared to traveling by bus, but it seemed like I was keeping up with the crowd. It was a nice evening at the camp kitchen with shared food and red wine.
