Day 1217, The Refugio – Rio Bravo: 4 Star Hotel

Posted by Thomas Andersen Posted on Feb - 01 - 2014

Distance: 46.73 km
Ride time: 3:22:44
Average: 13.91 km/h
Total: 22167 km

Waking up to more rain in our cozy refugio neither I nor Michael felt much like cycling. Instead we were making fire and sharing stories about life on and off the bike as the raindrops continued to fall outside.

At 3 pm the rain finally stopped. We put out the fire and jumped on the bikes. The road was a challenge and the climbs were longer and tougher than I had expected. On the other hand, climbing mountains on my bike is one of my favorite things to do, so I was not one to complain.

Towards the end of the day we were getting closer to the ferry from Rio Bravo to Yungay. We noticed an increase in traffic on the otherwise very quiet road and thought this meant that the ferry would be leaving soon. We tried to increase the speed but at the end we were 10 minutes late. We could see the ferry leaving just as we were descending from the last hill towards the small harbor.

This was not really a disaster as we knew that it was allowed to spend the night in the waiting room.

The waiting room was located right next to the lake with a wonderful panorama window. There was even a clean toilet in the building as well – like being in a four star hotel! With the standard of accommodation improving like this we were wondering where we would end up sleeping tomorrow. It will have to be quite good to beat this!
