Day 1239, Futalefu – Esquel: The Happy Reunion

Posted by Thomas Andersen Posted on Feb - 20 - 2014

Distance: 65.26 km
Ride time: 4:02:12
Average: 16.14 km/h
Total: 23139 km

Having cycled for 10 days since the last rest days in the southern part of Carretera Austral I was badly in need of a break. I didn’t have any plans for the day as I went into the local library at 10 am to check my email. I saw that Michael, another Danish cyclist was online. Michael was already in Argentina, but just one day ahead. When he mentioned steaks and red wine for dinner it didn’t take me long to decide to try to join him. The rest day would have to wait until tomorrow.

Back at the campsite I quickly took down my tent and got a bite to eat. I then found my passport and headed for the border. I love that cycle touring is this flexible!

It was downhill with tailwind for most of the day. The challenging part was the rough dirt road that was taking me towards the city of Trevelin. It was a special moment when the dirt road ended and the sealed road appeared. I think I will be back on dirt tracks sooner or later, but in theory you could cycle from here to Canada on sealed roads.

In Ezquel I found the hostel where Michael was staying. It was a happy reunion over good Argentinian meat and red wine, with many tales to share from the experiences on Carretera Austral.
