Day 1798, Tatamagouche – Halifax: Keeping Up

Posted by Thomas Andersen Posted on Dec - 13 - 2015

Distance: 143.1 km
Ride time: 6:11:10
Average: 23.1 km/h
Max speed: 54.4 km/h
Total: 42280 km

I hadn’t planned on going to Halifax, but things are flexible out here on the road. Anna wanted to join me for a ride, and after some thinking we decided to cycle over to Halifax for a beer – it was Saturday after all!

Look at that sign – I’m on my way home!

The mornings are starting to get cold – especially when the wind comes from the Golf of St. Lawrence. After climbing up the central plateau, the descend on the other side got rather chilly. A coffee break was in order then.

I love my new Canadian flag that Kelsey and Susan had given to me over in Armherst the other day.

Anna and I were flying across Nova Scotia towards Halifax. Yesterday Anna had mentioned that she hoped she could keep up on the bike. Today it was soon clear that the one who was trying to keep up was me. They must have good cycling genes up here! My shape is obviously not the worst, but man Anna is fast on a bike 🙂

In Stewiacke we had another little break – right at the halfway point between the Equator and the North Pole. It has been one hell of a ride since I crossed the equator in Ecuador. I won’t make it all the way to the North Pole by bike though.

The typical scenario of the day – Anna waiting somewhere up the road for the world cyclist to catch up 🙂

In Halifax we rode over to Anna’s grandma’s house for a quick shower. I don’t think I need to write that people here are just lovely, and the hospitality first class. That’s just how things are in the Maritimes…

After putting on a set of fresh clothes we took the ferry across thee harbour to downtown Halifax. A happy late summer/early fall atmosphere was present in the streets – as if the people were keen to enjoy the last sunny nights before the winter sets in.

Apart from Anna’s cousins we were going to meet Julianne – a Nova Scotian girl I met on a hiking trip in the high Andes mountains of Peru last year. It was a happy Saturday night in the beautiful and lively city of Halifax – a place where I felt right at home.
