Day 2136 – 2137: Tanger – Tarifa, Spain!

I feel like I have been saying goodbye to Africa a few times now, including the day I cycled into Cairo, the day I visited the Pyramids of Giza, and yesterday when I cycled into Tanger with Manon.

This morning when we rode down to the harbour of Tanger and bought our tickets for the ferry to Tarifa in Spain was the moment of the irrevocable goodbye to Africa.

After going through customs and cycling to the ferry, there literally wasn’t more ground to cover on this fascinating continent.

As the ferry left Tanger and the white houses of the medina disappeared, I thought about the amazing experiences I have had during the last 8 months.

Then my focus switched from Africa to Europa. The fast ferry only takes 40 minutes to cover the short distance over the Strait of Gibraltar from Tanger to Tarifa. But oh my, getting of the ferry in Spain was like entering another world; I didn’t get a stamp in my passport as I entered the country and I don’t have to worry about tourist visas running out anymore… It does indeed feel like getting home, even though there still is a bit of a way to go here from the most southern point in Europe and back to Copenhagen.

After making our way out of the harbour and through the very organized streets of the old city center, our first stop in Spain was lunch at a local restaurant. The “Menu del Dia” came with a beer – our first on this trip since you can’t buy alcohol of the street in Morocco. Cheers 🙂

Tarifa is known around the world for its windy beaches that are perfect for all kinds of surfing. And windy it was! We were flying out of town where we had planned to stay at a camp site. This is very much high season in coastal Spain and the camp sites were packed with surfers and other tourists from all over Europe. Luckily our tiny tent could still fit in.

Manon loves kite surfing, but with her knee still giving some problems it only came to looking this time. We might find a kite surfing spot or two further north in Spain…

After a lovely rest day enjoying the (windy!) beaches and the old town we are ready to begin our European adventure tomorrow.
