Day 2140 – 2142: Marbella – Malaga, Spain

Posted by Thomas Andersen Posted on Dec - 29 - 2016

Distance: 52.3 km
Ride time: 3:27:34
Average: 15.1 km/h
Max speed: 36.0 km/h
Total: 54220 km

As we packed our tent and started the easy 50 km into Malaga, the challenges and struggles of Africa seemed far away. This was easy riding with the Mediterranean to our right and the Andalusian mountains to our left.

In Fuengirola we teamed up with Juan who had brought his foldable bike to join us for the ride into Malaga. If we look happy and content that’s because we are 🙂

Today’s program consisted of cycling 15 km, having an ice cream, cycling 15, going for a dip in the ocean, cycling 15 km, having another ice cream… If only cycling around the world was always as easy as this.

I spent 6 months in Granada in 2006. Back then I had arrived with my big suitcase in Malaga and Juan had been in the airport to pick me up. Afterwards we spent some time in Malaga staying in his apartment. Now 10 years later I was not arriving by plane but my bike, but Juan was here once again, cycling with us to the same apartment where we were invited to stay once again! Gracias Juan!

It felt great to be back in Malaga and it was not difficult to decide to stay for a few days. We spent the days checking out the city center, going for a walk on the beach, having Manon’s knee checked at the hospital, updating the blog, and planning the next part of the trip up towards Barcelona.

My friend Rafa from Granada even made the trip down to the coast for a lunch together with his family. Looking forward to see you all again in Granada in a couple of days!

The last part of Africa had been rather exhausting so it feels like a deserved those easy days here at Costa del Sol. I’m sure the challenges will be back soon enough. To get to Granada we will need to climb some mountains…
