Day 42: Kirklareli – Uzunköprü

Posted by Thomas Andersen Posted on Nov - 14 - 2010

Distance: 84.84 km
Ridetime: 4:17:12
Average: 20.2 km/h
Dog chases: 2!
Total distance: 2974 km

When people give me advice that is solely based on stereotypes and fear I basically don’t pay any attention at all (then I should have stayed at home!). But, the warnings about the stray dogs of Turkey are not exaggerated. It seems like cars, scooters, horses and walking people can pass without problems, but something happens inside a dog’s brain when they see a cyclist. I don’t think I am in serious danger, but the 200 € rabies vaccines that seemed so expensive back home now suddenly feels like the best investment of my life.

Apart from the dogs, Turkey is fantastic. People are friendly and the culture is truly fascinating. I just learned that the bridge I crossed to get into Uzunköprü has been in use since 1443.

Sounds very uncomfortable with the stray dogs. What do you do when you meet them on the road? Have you developed a tactic?

  2. Thomas says:

Until now I have managed to escape by ignoring them or speed away as fast as I possibly can. I have also considered using my chain oil spray as a weapon 🙂

Wooow, beware of the dogs :)) Beside of that I see that you enjoy the country… All is new, the religion, the habits.. so much to learn 😉
