Day 162: Chiang Mai – Lampang

Posted by Thomas Andersen Posted on Mar - 18 - 2011

Distance: 101.55 km
Ridetime: 04:11:31
Average: 24.2 km/h
Total distance: 7274 km

After saying goodbye to Steve from Wales at the hostel it was great to be back on the road. As expected cycling in Thailand is easy. The road is good, the food is great, and people are friendly.

I loved riding into the mountains. Now I carry very little luggage, and with my light road bike I felt like flying up the climbs.

After some fast downhills I arrived in Lampang. I found a nice hotel and then went to the night market to find something to eat. The food stalls are typically managed by a small family. Perhaps mom is cooking, dad cleaning the tables, and a kid serving the plates. Its a joy watching the team work. Everyone is smiling and seem so happy.

I only spotted a few other tourists in town. While Thailand is indeed full of tourists, I think they stick to certain cities – probably the ones that Lonely Planet mention. Nothing wrong with that, I like meeting other travellers as well, but what I find so great about cycling is that you will be visiting the non-touristic places as well. You get the best of both worlds.
