Day 236: Bandar Lampung – Merak

Posted by Thomas Andersen Posted on Jun - 13 - 2011

Distance: 98.93 km
Ridetime: 04:12:45
Average: 22.5 km/h
Total distance: 11476 km

As I didn’t manage to find a bicycle shop in Bandar Lampung yesterday, I decided to take the chance and cycle towards the ferry for Java. I knew there would be plenty of buses should the tire give up completely.

Luckily the tire kept rolling all 90 km. The traffic was the worst I have encountered on Sumatra – probably a warning of things to come on Java.

At the ticket office nobody knew how to treat a bicycle. At first I payed 20000 rupiah or less than 2€ for a ticket. I was pretty sure I would be asked to pay more since I was carrying the bike, but to my surprise nobody asked.

The crossing of the straight between Sumatra and Java was beautiful. I love being on ferries.

As usual my presence draw a bit of attention. As the crew was testing a life boat they asked if I wanted to join. Afterwards everybody wanted a photo.

Once one Java I quickly found a cheap hotel. Tomorrow I will head to Jakarta.
