Day 817: Princetown – Apollo Bay

Posted by Thomas Andersen Posted on Jan - 08 - 2013

Distance: 96.30 km
Ridetime: 5:38:46
Average: 17.1 km/h
Max speed: 47.7 km/h
Total distance: 16793 km

I think this part of the Great Ocean Road should be renamed the Great Mountain Road. Just as I had finished the 40 km climb up to Lavers Hill I met Anton and his wife from Holland who were travelling by tandem bicycle.

They instantly invited me for pancakes at at restaurant near by where we had a nice chat about cycling. Thanks for the treat :-)

After saying goodbye to the wonderful Dutch couple I enjoyed a long descent into Apollo Bay. The landscape continues to amaze with the green hills and the blue ocean as a perfect backdrop.

Apollo Bay is a tourist town sparkling with life as the week between Christmas and New Year is probably the busiest of the year. I stocked up on food in the supermarket and had a nice break at the beach.

As the wind had died down compared to yesterday I was able to pitch my tent right on the beach. Not a bad spot to camp considering the price of 0$. The Great Ocean Road is great cycling indeed!
