Cycling Around The World Day 859: Fox Glacier – Hari Hari

Posted by Thomas Andersen Posted on Feb - 15 - 2013

Average: 20.5 km/h
Total: 19024 km

I was happy to see that the clouds and rain from yesterday had disappeared overnight as I woke up to a beautiful day. The weather surely changes fast around here. After saying goodbye to the Perth guys from my hostel room I went cycling towards the Franz Josef Glacier some 25 km away. It was very hillycycling but since I had fresh legs I enjoyed the climbs.

It was a nice one hour walk up the glacier valley to the lookout point, but after the hiking I had done at Mount Cook, the Franz Josef Glacier itself was not really anything impressive. You would probably need to join a guide group to go higher up on the glacier to get the better views. I chose to stay at ground level. After all there is plenty of nice views in New Zealand.

After some more cycling I found a Department of Conservation camp site for the night. At those places you are supposed to pay 6$ in a box based on an honor system. I wonder how many people do it. In my view it makes sense to support the idea of low cost camp sites by paying the fee.
