Day 2167, Tarragona – Tarrega, Spain: Back to Wild Camping

Posted by Thomas Andersen Posted on Jan - 08 - 2017

Distance: 89.2 km
Ride time: 5:56:03
Average: 15.0 km/h
Max speed: 50.0 km/h
Total: 55364 km

We left our “usual” Spain behind as we took a left turn in Tarragona towards the mountains. So far our Spanish ride has consisted of the Mediterranean Sea combined with white mountain villages. Now were were heading for the foothills of the Pyrenees which separates Spain and France.

We climbed to 600 meters of altitude in a rather intense 35 degree heat that of course called for an ice cream break here and there. The small towns we are passing now are not white anymore. Instead they are much more like French medieval villages with their brown bricks and big church on the central square. A change of culture even though we are still on the southern side of the Pyrenees.

Last week we were smack in the middle of the high tourist season on the coast. These days everyone is returning from the summer holidays and the Camping Municipal in Tarrega was already closed for the season. What a change in just a few days. It was time to go wild camping instead…

It was easy enough to find a quiet camp spot in the farming country of inner Catalonia – and I was reminded how much I like this kind of camping which we haven’t really done in Spain until now. The sunset over the fields of northern Spain was beautiful.

Tomorrow we will hit the real Pyrenees and then next stop will be Andorra!
