Day 18: Nowy Sacz – Presov

Posted by Thomas Andersen Posted on Oct - 22 - 2010

Distance: 107.9 km
Ridetime: 5:58:12
Average: 17.9 km/h
Total distance: 1363 km

The border between Poland and Slovakia consists of the Tatra mountains. Hence it was over with the relative flat cycling I have been enjoying since leaving Denmark 1200 km ago. I was quite excited about riding in the mountains with the cycle packed with tent, clothes etc. My legs didn’t fail me and everything went great even on the 12% slopes. The fog from yesterday had cleared so the descents were also fun.

In Presov I met with couchsurfing host Dano – a French language PhD student from the local university. Apart from being a great person Dano is also a great cook. Soon after I arrived I was treated with a tasty dinner consisting of chicken, salad and bread. That was quite something for an ever hungry cyclist.

Dano was going to a theater show and left me the keys for his apartment as we agreed to meet two hours later for a beer in town. I think that this kind of spontaneous trust is such a beautiful thing and makes the whole trip worthwhile.

After walking through the medieval center of Presov I met Dano and his friends in a bar to watch a Champions League football match. A great chance to try a selection of the Slovakian beers and even taste the local Bošácka slivovica 52% fruit-plums-brandy. As we walked home I wondered if I would be able to make it to Ukraine tomorrow.
