Day 1306, Vinchina – Vila Union: The Return to Civilization

Posted by Thomas Andersen Posted on May - 20 - 2014

Distance: 69.12 km
Ride time: 3:32:26
Average: 19.24 km/h
Altitude: 1153 m
Total: 25970 km

After another rest day at Omar’s Hotel in Vinchina (spent mostly in front of our laptops letting people know we were still alive) we had a comfortable 69 km ride into Vila Union on the program today.

Compared to our last two weeks in the mountains, this was very civilized cycling; the road was paved, the weather was warm and comfortable, no more problems with the altitude, and there was even a village en route where we could buy an ice cream. Pure luxury compared to just two days ago.

Since we are just coming down from a week at 4000 meters of altitude I was curious as to weather I would be able to feel the effects. After all I am expecting to have some rather high haematocrit levels these days. Unfortunately there was not a big effect to be felt on the road. Oh well, I guess I’m still tired from the days in the mountains. Maybe I will be racing like a Tour de France rider on EPO tomorrow instead 🙂

In Vila Union we checked into the same camp ground where we had stayed two weeks ago and continued our ‘back in civilization’ celebrations by cooking a nice asado – no more pasta with tuna as we had mostly been eating the last weeks.
