Day 1728, Tulum – Playa del Carmen: Ruins, Cycling, and Beer

Posted by Thomas Andersen Posted on Jul - 12 - 2015

Distance: 62.3 km
Ride time: 2:48:47
Average: 22.2 km/h
Max speed: 30.2 km/h
Total: 37760 km

The first thing on my program this morning was to visit the Maya ruins of Tulum. I remember the site from my visit to Mexico in 2008 – not so much because of the ruins themselves, but because of the location right next to the Caribbean sea.

I had been looking forward to visit this important Mayan port city for the 2nd time, and had made sure that my camera battery was fully charged. Enjoy!

After the visit to Tulum I jumped on my bike and began the quick 60 km ride towards Playa del Carmen. I was going to meet Zalo XE3N who had generously invited me to stay in his house. We met at the busy tourist shopping street for a quick look around before going back to Zalo’ place for dinner with his nice family.

Later I joined Zalo for a visit to one of his favourite Cuban bars in town. The place was absolutely rocking with live salsa music and a lot of dancing. Sitting right there at that bar in Playa del Carmen, sharing a few local Tecate beers with Zalo, I realized how much I am going to miss latin America. In only a few days I’m flying from Cancun to Florida; my time in Spanish speaking America is very much coming to an end.

  1. What spectacular ruins! No wonder you wanted to return. I will have to make it a point to get there myself. It’s only a matter of how quickly I get there. I was in a car smash, at the beginning of this week, and don’t feel confident driving a car or riding a bicycle. However, if I don’t get back on my bike (and I probably will), I already have a crazier plan in mind – pushing a pram around the world! I’m not sure if anyone’s done that yet!

  2. Sorry to read about your car smash, hopefully nothing too serious? The crazy plan sounds good!

  3. Thomas: I feel a little shaken, still. Still get the headaches, but not as bad. But I’ll get through that. Just a matter of time. 🙂

    Amazing photos (again) 🙂

  5. And thanks (again) Marie 😉 Hope you are enjoying the summer in Germany. I’m having a blast in Florida. More updates coming soon…
