Day 2000, Nkhamenya – Chikangawa: Celebration Time!

Posted by Thomas Andersen Posted on Apr - 16 - 2016

Distance: 102.1 km
Ride time: 7:00:47
Average: 14.6 km/h
Max speed: 48.2 km/h
Total: 48020 km

2/10/2010 – 24/3/2016 => 2000 days on the road today!! That’s about 1600 more than I had planned, but I certainly wouldn’t change the last 5 and a half years for anything else. Thank you once again for being along for the ride – it means a lot in the good as well as the challenging times.

And what a beautiful place to celebrate – those green mountains with the rock features up here in the highlands of Malawi.

The road kept climbing all the way to 1700 m and I was suddenly passing real forests for the first time in Africa. There is indeed a big sawmill in Chikangawa, and in the small villages I could smell how wood was being burned to cook, and to keep warm in the evening hours.

It was not only 2000 days on the road I was celebrating today. With 20 kilometers to go I also passed the 48000 km mark. 50K should be just around equator up there in Uganda!

Chikangawa might have had a big saw mill, but I didn’t see any guest houses. I was just getting ready to put up my tent as I saw a sign saying “rooms” leading into the woods. I found an old building that at first appeared empty, but after a couple of minutes a guy came out. Yes, sure enough I could get a room for the night, but there would be no water and limited electricity. Oh well, a warm bed sounded fine enough with me.

I imagine that the big house would once have belonged to a wealthy person – perhaps the director of the sawmill. Now the big rooms were mostly empty. The fireplace will come in handy when winter arrives. For now it’s still fall in this part of the world.

  1. The past 2000 days have been fantastic! It’s been a privilege to follow you on your journey around the world! I must say, I’m not looking forward to you completing it! haha.

  2. Matthew says:

Congrats on 2000 days on the road! Fitting too you’d reach 48,000km at the same time.

  3. Scott KA9FOX says:

Curious how much that room was? I really like it when you talk about the costs of things.

  4. Thanks Stephen, great to hear!! Although, I think it’s best if you go out there and cycle around the world rather than I spend another 2000 days “recycling the globe” 😉

  5. Thanks Matthew… yes, two in one 🙂 The next big milestone will be 50000 km…

  6. I’m afraid I don’t remember exactly how much I paid for this room, Scott. In Malawi all my rooms were between 1000 and 8000 kwacha which should be 1.5 – 11$. A good guess for this one might be 6 or 7$.

Congratulations Thomas. I have enjoyed “riding” with you since the beginning. I can only imagine how amazing it must be to ride through such interesting scenery. Continued good travels!
