I had been staying in a cheap hotel in the border town of Busia between Uganda and Kenya. This morning’s first project was to enter Kenya – country number 48 in Cycling The Globe history. Even after all these border crossings it’s still something special to be arriving in a new country.
I think Kenya can somehow be described as the last truly Sub-Saharan African country I will visit on my way north. In Ethiopia things will already start to change, and Sudan and Egypt is already more like the Middle East. I have really been enjoying my stay in this part of Africa, and I have no reason to believe that Kenya will not be a great place to finish this part of the ride.
Busia itself is a small but busy border town with lines of trucks waiting to pass the customs. As usual things go a lot quicker when you only have your bike…
As soon as I left Busia things got really quiet and I found myself taking a short cut on a remote dirt road. I love the fact that it’s so safe around here that you can basically go anywhere without even considering safety.
An hour later I rejoined a sealed highway and made some progress towards the north.
In Webuye I found myself a hotel room, slightly more expensive than what I used to pay in Uganda, but that is OK for the first night in a new country. After a day or two you quickly learn how to find the cheap rooms.
Your current passport must be almost full, now!
I’m on my 3rd passport of the trip – and still a few pages left 🙂
