I had planned a visit to Petra, the old ruins being the star attraction of Jordan. What I learned when I got there was that the official price of the entrance ticket had skyrocket from 15 to 50 euro since my guide book had been published. In principle I don’t think it is fair to charge 50 euro for any tourist attraction so I decided to skip the visit.
From Aqaba there are two ways to go to Egypt. The first option is to go overland via Israel, the second is to take a direct ferry across the Red Sea. With the problematic Israeli border crossings and stamp issues in mind I decided to book a ticket for the ferry.
I agree that 50 Euros is too much for a ticket, but it is an amazing place. So few people get the chance to see the buildings carved into the stone that you probably should have paid and gone in anyway. It is one of those places I have visited that I will never forget.
