Day 814: The Bluff – Portland

Posted by Thomas Andersen Posted on Jan - 07 - 2013

Distance: 145.62 km
Ridetime: 7:07:09
Average: 20.5 km/h
Max speed: 45.9 km/h
Total distance: 16507 km

I woke up early at my forest camp site and was cycling by 7 am. In Mount Gambier I went to the supermarket to buy some food. It was clear that Christmas was getting close. Most people were shopping for their Christmas dinners. I guess my own dinner will be very limited this year.

After some rather cold days (in my world that means 18-22°C) it was now getting hot again. Some people were talking about 37 degrees. I only know that I was feeling good on the road. My inner thermometer is still in Outback mode.

In the beginning of the day my legs were tired from yesterdays long ride. Luckily they improved during the day. Legs can feel very tired after 70 km of riding but much better after 130 km.

I also made it to Victoria – only the 3rd Australian state I visit after 3500 km of riding here. Its a big country. My first impression of Victoria is that the road got worse but the landscape more green.

I made another quick stop in Portland to enjoy 3 ice creams in McDonald’s (they only cost 30 cents each). Then I found a perfect spot to beach camp. After I had set up my tent a friendly fisherman came over to say hello. At first he was a little surprised I was going to sleep on the beach but soon he liked the idea and said he was sure there would be no problems.

I had a wonderful night’s sleep to the sound of the waves.
