Day 819: Geelong – Melbourne

Posted by Thomas Andersen Posted on Jan - 09 - 2013

Distance: 81.51 km
Ridetime: 3:27:51
Average: 23.5 km/h
Max speed: 40.4 km/h
Total distance: 16977 km

In the morning I joined Guy and Freddie for a short morning ride to Guy’s work place. Guy is one of the few Australians who cycle to work. There is quite a bit of cycling infrastructure around here with bike lanes etc, but few people use them.

Once again today I was enjoying a strong tail wind all the way to Melbourne. My average speed could have been higher if I had followed the main highway, but I was zig-zagging my way into the city on the Federation Path, a bike lane that took me through the suburbs of Melbourne.

I have been on the country side for so long time that the urban landscape I was cycling through felt strangely exotic. I guess not many people would see it like this, but I found the industrial neighborhoods beautiful and certainly very different from the places I have been lately.

Finally Melbourne’s skyline appeared and I made my way to the Victoria Market.

The next 10 days I will rest the legs and celebrate New Year in Melbourne!
