Day 1751, Darien – Savannah: The Movie Star

Ride time: 4:24:54
Average: 22.1 km/h
Max speed: 42.1 km/h
Total: 38996 km

I was pretty excited as I left my cheap motel room in Darien and headed for Savannah. I had heard many good things about this pretty southern city at the coast of Georgia.

Not many things are small in the US… but I found one on the road today.

Even before I got to Savannah I was treated to some southern hospitality. I was making a brief stop at a gas station to enjoy some air condition and a cold drink when I waiter came down to tell that I guy just payed for a sandwich. I don’t even know who it was. Thanks stranger!

After that nice surprise I was cycling into Savannah with a smile on my face. Without any competition, Savannah is the prettiest city I have seen in the US so far. I was making my way around the many small squares by bike, enjoying the views that greeted me at every turn.

At some point I was passing what looked like a film set, and I saw a group of people surrounding a guy in the middle. I don’t watch a lot of movies myself, but I did recognize this guy that was suddenly right there in front of me. Pretty cool!

I still didn’t have a place to stay for the night, so I thought I would just be leaving Savannah again with the last daylight and put up my tent outside the city. Then I got a call from Jason, a friend of a friend, who invited me over to his house for the night. Wow, how nice was that. Jason is a teacher at the Savannah Collage of Art and Design – a famous institution if you are into arts.

In fact I got to sleep at an air mattress right there in Jason’s studio! Thanks for the invitation Jason!

Beautiful southern architecture, movie stars, and amazing hospitality. Life on the road is never boring. Tomorrow I should already be in South Carolina!
