Day 2150, Totana – Murcia, Spain: Spanish Style

Posted by Thomas Andersen Posted on Jan - 03 - 2017

Distance: 52.4 km
Ride time: 2:32:56
Average: 20.6 km/h
Max speed: 38.5 km/h
Total: 54698 km

Luckily it was only a 50 km ride into Murcia – a good thing that we could arrive at noon as the temperature reached 40 degrees. The road was mostly flat and somehow less interesting than what we have been used to in Spain. In fact we are both surprised about how scenic this Mediterranean country has been from the day we arrived and until now. A first class cycling destination indeed.

In Murcia we went for a walk around town, enjoying the impressive architecture. You get the idea that this place has a rich history. Having travelled through South and Central America earlier on this trip I know that the Spanish empire was once the biggest in the world, and the whole “New World” was ruled from these parts.

In fact we were supposed to be in Barcelona now; my two sisters and my two year old nephew will arrive there tomorrow for 5 days of vacation. I guess Morocco and Spain has just been so captivating that it didn’t make sense to rush through while meeting good friends and enjoying the breaks in Malaga and Granada. Our stay here has been pretty Spanish style 🙂 We will therefore park our bikes at our hostel in Murcia and join a shared car the 600 km north to Barcelona tomorrow morning. Another nice break coming up.
